Q. What is spline rolling?
A. Spline-rolling is a generic term used to describe a high production, economical cold forming process that can actually be used to form many shapes; including splines, threads, helixes, snap rings and more. The spline rolling process utilizes two opposing forming racks which advance over a cylindrical part under extremely high forces. Material on the part is physically displaced in a chipless operation to generate the desired form.
Q. What are the advantages of spline rolling?
A. Lower Costs – Spline rolling yields the lowest piece cost of any Spline producing process. Spline Rolling Machines have very high production rates (up to 300 parts per hour) and have documented uptimes of over 95 percent. Forming racks have very long tool life and can commonly produce 100,000 parts or more between each grind. Forming racks can typically be reground up to five times.
Stronger Splines – Rolled splines are produced by moving the material. This displacement method of forming results in improved grain structure and a work-hardened Spline surface. As a result, rolled splines are typically 25 to 30 percent stronger than cut splines.
Improved Surface Finish – A rolled spline has a superior surface finish. The tooth flanks typically have a surface finish of between 3 and 15 RMS.
